The Devil

 

He seems to have been demoted — the devil,

I mean — Satan, Old Scratch, Doctor D,

Beelzebub. He’s gone the way of the Seven

 

Deadly Sins, into the purgatory

of outmoded concepts. There’s still Heaven,

but it’s more abstract — not like Bosch, more

 

like Mondrian. Hell? Some have cut themselves free

of that, but when I look in the mirror,

I see the devil looking back at me.
