Well-Made Things

True craftsmanship is hardly ever wasted

in the service of poor design — most

of us can’t help but recognize good taste

in well-made things. Good work tends to be slow,

patient — the opposite of craft is haste.

The tailored crease, the edge beveled just so,

the fiddler’s air you can’t forget . . . the ghost

of the maker’s hand and heart is there — though

perfection may be out of reach, it’s close.
